[[underlined]] Saturday, March 2. [[/underlined]] Jeff and I planned to go out to sample K/T at 3 sites at our leisure. Not starting very early. It dawned a gorgeous day and I had Tang, coffee, and oatmeal in my tent not knowing I was invited for pancakes next door. Went to big tent to trace part of Carlos' map and to put Pete Sadler's newly mapped [[homeday?]] on my map. We started out ~ noon at an easy pace. I found it easy enough to climb the hills which were more solid than muddy, except on sun-facing slopes. We admired the view, took pictures; suddenly, as we stood on one peak, a snow petrel circled us 3 times - a lovely sight under the blue sky. We found that our core tubes work poorly, but we took || one plus 3 "grab" samples. || A messy business. I had taken out some steaks & left them in cook tent for supper; but came home so late that Charlie an Scott decided to cook them -- made chicken fried steak, one big one, for six of us.

Went to radio tent for the nightly talk w. Buzy. We have v. cold weather (14°F last night) & most of the bay is iced up. Only a few deep blue gashes show where wind has kept the water clear. Buzy got worried: decided to come early - take us off, & go back to Palmer! He intends to

bring Polar Duke here by noon on the 10th. Great! We get off earlier and we see the beautiful shoreline from here to Palmer! Best news in a long time. One variation on that scenario: if we get a South blow, Bill will tell Buzy to come immediately & get here when the ice is blown out to sea. I learned that Brian & Pete Sadler are going out to the K/T tomorrow & urged Jeff to come too. I think we should. So, at 10:20 -- to bed.

(Incidentally, last night I was cold in bed -- even w. bivouac pants, booties, polyprof & wool underwear, [[Dewaits??]] double force turtle, Eddie Bauer Stuffed Sleepwear, and a second puffy top. Put on my sweater ~ 3:30. But my left foot was so cold it felt as tho it was outside the door. Made no sense when my right foot was toasty warm. Nothing helped. I decided all circulation was stopped & gangrene would set in; but awoke at 8:30 w both feet toasty).

[[underlined]] Sunday, March 3.[[/underlined]] Got up at 6:50 to catch Pete & Brian for a big day on the K/T. However, I met Brian as he came out of the privy and asked him if it would be worthwhile for Jeff and me to come along. He didn't think so. They were also going to work on another formation and there really are not any more K/T sites he knows of except possibly on the opposite beach where we should sample. Jeff poked his head out & heard all this so we decided to go out w Bill fossil-hunting. Yesterday he found an area strewn w giant ammonites. It was an overcast, almost windless day. Although the S.I. flags showed a bit of breeze from the NE. Jeff & I walked down to the shore before field expedition began.
