That means it is not the K/T at all, and all our samples are too low in the Section. Today Brian was going back to a section across the island where a red layer may mark the boundary. It was impossible for me to go, so I was pleased Jeff did. But they are not back -- yes they are: Jeff just poked his head in and told me all about it. A worthwhile day for learning how difficult it is to trace the section. They enjoyed the time together. We will confer tomorrow on what to do next.

I decided I should get dinner tonight so told Fred and Charlie so in pm. Turkey tetrazini, I said, plus tuna fish and cheddar cheese. They thought this was great so we met in cook tent about to begin to melt water etc. It was great fun. Lanz arrived just in time, & Jeff Stilwell came at end -- we had saved for him.

I've had a slight ache in left hip [[??]] lately. Just before supper I fell as I came out of tent & [[?found]] the site throbbing & throbbing -- I [[underlined]] hope [[/underlined]] its only a [[?]] Off to sleep ~ 9:10. Stuffed up horribly.

An easy day. Up ~ 7:20 for breakfast in cook tent. Eggs and biscuits. Then back to sleeping bag. Overcast, w some wind and splitting snow. Lanz & Larry went out dutifully but came home an hour or so later - Too much snow, and Larry has a bothersome cold.

I kept warm & read Woman & Demon. Lanz came in from big tent and announced that the crowd there would swap me Dan Chaney for my bottle of Scotch. I said "No deal." Later I went to big tent and found Luis making boxes, Bill packing specimens and addressing

boxes, Mike standing around, Marilyn packing samples, and Scott and Judd playing chess. Bill and Mike took photos of all this but I didn't. Snow continued all day & created great drifts of fresh clean stuff for water jugs. I finally began working on my German article. Then, when feet congealed and I v. cold I came back to tent but failed to get warm. First stopped at Jeff's tent to discuss project and leave my Cecil ms. for him to read. Lanz was there, of course, although Phil was out in field. In mid P.M. Bill and Brian fell into an argument about "the chocolate brown layer." It seemed as tho they used that name for 2 different formations. So Bill said: Let's go for a walk; the weather's not too bad." Out they went, on the two Suzuki's -- snow, wind, and all.
Back here I could not get warm, so went to cook tent ~5:30 where Lanz was beginning an early dinner. Bisquick biscuits, beef stroganoff & hamburger, flambe' peaches on the biscuits. Then, we decided to have cocoa w creme de menthe in it. That was lovely: a creamy, hot delightful ending to a pleasant meal -- w Lanz, me, Scott, Fred, Charlie, Jeff S. Brian, Larry -- 8 in a small tent. Now it is a quiet night w SE wind & we wonder about tomorrow.

The most stunningly beautiful day on the Island, so far. Clear sky, bright sun, almost windless.

Jeff and I went out to sample the chocolate brown layer - a lithologic change that may or may not have any relationship with the K/T. Started out w Brian to where
