go along that ridge and I'll catch up to you." Jeff took off like a streak -- instead of ambling. We topped the ridge where wind was horrendous and waited. Bill never came, before we felt compelled to go on. Jeff had been out w Brian and thought he could find where party #1 were working -- failed. We looked & looked and climbed and slid in mud & snow w endless effort. Had a bit to eat ~ 1:30 & had just decided to make another horrendous climb when Luis spotted 4 of our party crossing on wash lower down. We caught up w. Pete Sandler & learned how things were going. We were in a critically important area where any ammonites would be above the K/T. We searched a while, then decided to go home -- We had crosed the [[??]] the [[strikethrough]] wrong [[/strikethrough]] long way (almost) & now had to go back. On days like this I am always ambivalent about whether or not I want to be there. If I didn't, I would not keep coming to Antarctica. On the other hand, I am always afraid I won't be able to keep pace & that was essentially true today after we lost Bill. Thank heaven for Luis, who does more than than I. As we hiked, we found Bill again & followed him straight down over to warm face of the [[??]] -- all muddy from the sun. Most of us fell & got smeared w mud. By 5:30 or so Luis & I got home having left the 2 Jeffs picking fossils near camp. Camp getting muddy from sun & melting snow. I got supper tonight. Tuna & cheese & peas & last night's macaroni in chicken soup w. V8. Dessert -- Graham crackers crushed on plate - chocolate pudding on it [[end page]] [[start page]] studded w almonds & cashews - surrounded by mandarin oranges - covered w chocolate bar shavings & poured w creme de Menthe! An adventurous day -- too bad we didn't go w Brian & learn something & help him. A north wind [[underlined]] packed [[/underlined]] the bag w ice today. Never saw so much out there. A different scene from yesterday indeed -- & scary if we want to board the Polar [[??]] Sunday. Wispy cloudy but no good sunset. [[underlined]] Friday, March 8 [[/underlined]] Foggy, w. light snow off & on. Cannot se Cockburn Jr. at all. Early in morning wind shifted to E & blew gently. Then ice began to clear from bay. But it shifted back so I fully expect pack ice to crowd shore again. A day, for most everyone, of "farting around camp" (Bill's phrase). Larry got up fairly early after having something hot here in tent. I roused out later because my coffee and Lanz in cook tent. Tent sealed for night. I came back & started to light stove for my breakfast. However, Fred soon went by announcing pancake-making. I went over & watched Fred & Charlie prepare pancake mix w. incredible full pan of apples & cinnamon - egg mix - liquids. It didn't work. Too soft & wet, so we had sort of apple-cinnamon bread pudding - Lanz & Larry stopped by for some & Fred felt it was all a disaster - actually it was great fun - good food & company. I shoveled out all our boxes for distribution in main store - We now have a great pile of cans & boxes to burn & food to leave (I hope). Tomorrow Jeff & I must do our sample labels &
