box-packing. Today he went out with Brian -- the best possible use of his time. They came in, in light snow, about 6:30. Tony got supper -- chicken & rice and a fancy dessert. Vanilla pudding with melted Cadbury bar & hydrated strawberries on it. I intended to take interior pictures all this time -- our tent & big tent. Its tomorrow or never. Feet cold & wet all day from frosted boots, so to bed ~ 9:15.
Saturday, March 9
Tony came in soon after I doused the lantern and reported on a big do at the big tent. Jeff Post brought in his bottle of rum & made a big pot of fruit punch. Everybody got looking & suggested comments went around. Tony wrote a comment on the wall: "17 men and not a good man among them." That started a slew of others about "Thanks, Tony, it was delicious" "Twenty five days & 3 women but the blue-eyed penguins are best." Three women, but no sheep" etc etc etc. She also went in to wake up Pete & offer to solve her problem -- in the storm he said he didn't want to die a virgin. Chaney was there w a camera & others outside, but she giggled too much from the first. These doings started me tumbling of when I was 26 & 27. That was a great scene. -- During the night I awoke & was sure it was raining. Everybod agrees it sounded like rain, but was not. [[?]] new snow & overcast today. In AM Jeff & I packed our sample box & nailed it up. From here it will go to Palmer to ship [[?field]] & on it to London -- then to

New York -- my big box, also, which I packed this afternoon.
Day very mild: 36 [[degrees]][[strikethrough]]C[[/strikethrough]]F in mid PM with sun behind clouds. Jeff & I walked up beach at mid-tide to collect fossils for folks on ship. A Hercules arrived overhead from Buenos Aires and we caught first one glimpse of it. It circled & maneuvered over to [[?]], but I never landed. I believe it flew off to south.
The Polar Duke left Palmer at 9 this a.m. -- instead of 6:00 [[three dots meaning "therefore"]] it will arrive here until late PM tomorrow. [[?]] is pretty nearly packed up. I could be ready in 1 1/2 hour easily. I am scheduled to go off w [[?]] in 2nd zodiac -- but we seriously doubt it will be until Mon. A.M. Meanwhile, a light S. wind is holding & keeping the bay free of ice. It will be interesting to see if they will come in time to catch it that way.
In late PM we all began chopping ice from [[?]] of our tents. It was one frightful job. I started, Lanz joined; then, after finishing their own. Fred, Charlie, & Scott took over ours. Jeff Stillwell arrived to help but was not needed.
Supper was held in big tent where Fred, Scott & Charlie made Chili & burger for 12 people, and Lanz & Luis made Tortillas on one table w bisquick & [[?]] of cheese. I brought out my whiskey & 2 bottles of wine. Others had beer. After feast, Luis lighted Coleman & let it flame up. To be funny, Dan Chaney came in & put it out w fire extinguisher -- thus [[?]] party immediately. But Lanz & some [[?]] repaired to our cook tent & are still giggling & flirting
