them by Pat, and issuing us fresh tourist (?) papers. A mail delivery occurred and Pat handed me a letter from Tom .. saying that Pan Am was on strike and Santiago had an earthquake and he might have to meet me at Asuncion! I'm glad I saw him before I read that. (So was he). He included clippings on both events. Jeff read them w. great interest.

Eventually, they let us off and ITT carried us to town in a minibus. There were great farewell scenes, as Tony, Fred, & Charlie were going to try to leave town today and travel to Viño del Mar. Tony did not want to go so soon. She said she wanted to just relax one day before the effort of starting home. She had a hug for Scott & a kiss for Phil & for me & so on. I never believed they would leave on a 1:30 plane w. so little notice -- but they did. I had a chance in lobby of Los Nav. to introduce Tom & Tony & to others. Rooms were not yet ready, so we sat & waited until finally we were called & offered a double. It faced the roof of courtyard, had no refrig, & was not pleasant. So we asked for a better one & were placed in 305 over the front entrance -- v. nice.

same confusion of suppliers. However, at one place near end of the line - second level -- we found exactly what we wanted -- even better, it was a taller model, capable of taking a notebook - well-padded, brown. Tom couldn't believe it. He liked it so much; finding it was so unexpected. We really should have bought 2 of them. He kept saying that we couldn't get such bags at home any more. we also bought 2 small bottles of Drambuie & 2 of Glen Livet for evening refreshers. Looked over the inner galleries and then, at end, as we were ready to leave, there was José with his cab. He waved at me and asked how was Antarctica. I introduced Tom and we discussed a trip for tomorrow -- then rode home. A big party was planned at the Asturias for Duke passengers but we begged off. We had not dined together since Feb. 4, and I was definitely party-shy. Went to Salitos & sat in back on raised portion. Eventually people filled the place, including Mark & Pat and sev. others. Home and together, at last.

[[underlined]] Tuesday, March 19th [[/underlined]] Met Jeff at breakfast for a big day in the country. In the morning to the penguins again & pm to Fort Bulnes. The driver picked us up at 9:00 for the ride to Seno Otway. He said, at first, that he was not so sure we would find any penguins
[[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] after all. We said - let's go, anyway & off we went. A grand ride - many rheas, geese, and big red-breasted meadow larks - no ibis this time. A far better day than before, clear & sunny w no raging wind. Jeff & I found it was good
