to be hiking again when we walked to the penguinena. Finally we did see them -- but only a few -- 30 or so left. Tom got good view, but penguins would not let us get close to them as they did before. When we were still a few hundred yards away they all took to the water & rode w. the waves -- broke into 2 groups & did not return while we stayed. We found several penguins in burrows. Sometimes 2 at once & each one would roll its head from side to side to see us first w. one eye, then w. the other. José roused out one immature which tried to escape him & squawked as he stopped it. Finally, he let it back in its own burrow. Enroute home, stopped for sev. birds & pictures and even a herd of holsteins -- for Jeff's prospective parents in law.

Lunch at Los Navegantes. Mushroom soup and Tortilla Espanola - a huge round, puffy, baked "omelette" full of vegetables. We each had one; then Jeff joined us & had big sliver of our Tortillas. He was very interested in helping Richard Radtke and Janice Bell - biologists - wheel chair - arrange for a trip w. our driver.

José picked us up again at 2:00 & we drove south along the Strait to the Fort. A gorgeous pm w. dark blue water & distant snow-capped peaks. We followed the tide line a long way and Jose stopped to show us 2 birds on the pebble beach: a caracana, & a hawk. Also steamer ducks & s. Bl. backed gulls. Left shore & into woods - gnarled nothofagus. I stopped to collect a spray & Jeff jumped out too. The leaves

are indeed beech leaves - very small but definite. José collected a bunch of pink berries - offered to stop at [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] a place that sells country cheese, but we apparently forgot on way back. Ft. Bulnes stands on top of a high point facing sea. High cliff - Timber frames, sod walls. Exhibits gone for season. We walked around and took photos ... back to car. Saw no one at fort & only 2 people in area -- 2 soldiers & 2 dogs at water line below Fort. Beautiful ride home. Dinner at hotel w Brian & his assistant, Scott, Radtke & Bell at next table & I sat briefly w them after ^[[meal]] to describe our day & offer to arr. trip for them. They want to go out on Thurs. am.

Jeff's departure date ~ 12:45. He awoke & took an early walk on a clear chilly morning. Arrived back just as we came to breakfast. Afterward - about 10:00 we walked to an artesiana store (not CEMA) which he had heard about & visited earlier. He bought a sweater for Ann but wasn't certain of fit so had me try it on. Too tight under arms but sleeves too long. At store we saw all sorts of things - sweaters, silk tops (very heavy silk "grosgrain" to pull over head & leave loose) unique & bright but expensive. Leather goods, spurs, copper dishes etc. I discovered a big brown & white rough-hewn cardigan that fitted me perfectly. Tom saw the style & fit & urged me to buy it -- about $12.00. Didn't need it, but is a [[caisa?]] gentilica par excellence. Will be great in the office. Jeff bought a wool skirt for Ann w flowers around bottom and a waistcoat in beige & orange -- v. nice.
