flight back to P.A. we went back to Yugoslavian Club for tea & toast. Enjoyed it much & then went across st. to DAC. And sat, & sat, & sat, & sat, in a small, smokey waiting room long after flight was scheduled. People came & went. Finally, a little bus picked us up & then drove all over town picking up passengers at 6 or 7 addresses. At the end we went to an airstip - loaded onto a Metro and took off across the strait. We flew over the Lago de Cisnos - which was NOT dried up, but had salty margins & may not have been a good place to see black-necked swans. Twelve minutes later, after flying over gun-metal, quiet water w sunset color, we landed at P.A. -- and by 7:50 or so were deposited at our hotel. We simply slumped on beds w no plan. But, at about 8:15 a knocking at door and Janice was there asking if we would join crowd for dinner. They had a nice day w José - saw flamingoes on territory restricted by Chilean army -- & stayed out until ~4:00 -- to fort etc. (José did ask Tom for 1000 more pesos for 3 passengers instead of the two we negotiated for. But the day was longer than planned.)

We agreed to all go to the Astureas. Tom & I, Janice Richard, & Tom & Pat Kracher. It was a big production to get Richard there -- and in -- and to a table for 6 in that little restaurant. Two men moved out of their table for two to allow for it. He is not only crippled with 2 useless legs but evidently also needs help using arms to get jackets on & off.

Tom, Janice, & Tom ordered ostiones parmesian -- which proved to be scallops - not oysters! Richard & Pat had squid salad & liked it - I decided this was the best restaurant I had been in in Chile, & we should come back the next, & final night. A cool walk back to hotel & so to bed.

A day for repacking and relaxing -- more than we expected, because shortly after breakfast Tom threw up -- everything. Then spent much time dozing in bed. I packed everything, using pink suitcase for warm clothing not to be needed in tropical S. America. Had no formal lunch, I was not hungry but ate an orange & a banana we had carried away from earlier breakfasts. Decided to leave behind my wool pants (from Phoenix) my red raincoat, black, embroidered sweater, and white eyelet blouse, Tom slept most of P.M. but didn't feel too bad. Late in p.m. we had a walk to park & on to dock to view polar duke. It was a gorgeous afternoon w low sun & bright color. The Duke had had to move off dock to make room for other ships and then come back on for side of a barge, rough boat of some kind. But the town was full of young sailors in blue & white - a great 4-masted ship was at dock -- Chilean, we thought, but the papers said Spanish. The dock was a most colorful sight - moving w people & crowded w ships, big & small, and the schooner was
