We saw new birds all day long. [[underlined]] A yellow & blue macaw [[/underlined]] lives on ranch & pulls at leaves out behind dining room. [[underlined]] Hyacinth macaws [[/underlined]] out in Pantanal. Jabiru, sev. pairs; a stunning cream-colored bird w black cap, blue patch on face, crest & long trailing feather, purple bill & legs. Others listed later - also Capybara families, [[Jocare??]], macaws, sounds of howler monkeys.

Walked home thru mud stretch & all way barefoot to room. Shower - dinner - capirinhas made w no ice -- and an evening of discussion w. our German colleague.

[[underlined]] Sunday, March 31 [[/underlined]]
I awoke sometime in the night and saw the Southern cross & α & ß Centauri through the screen beside my hammock. Then, in the second screen I saw a very bright meteor flame out. A head that looked a few inches across & a long tail.

Early in the morning our German friend arose for breakfast, then collected his bag to go to the boat. Tom was sleeping soundly, upside down on the bed. I got up up but tiptoed around until the German made a final trip back for his cameras. He had a long trip to catch a plane at Corumbá for S. Paulo. There, he will work a few days in his old firm so as to keep current his working visa -- a precious possession, now irreplaceable. We decided, while we were alone, to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. We had no idea how many other tourists might arrive by return boat.

in the only nearby tree w. flowers. Hummingbirds, a glossy black bird w russet shoulders, & many another species flew in & out. We whiled away the hours "devagoryinho". Slipping into a totally different tempo from home. Lunch came at 12:00. It is palm Sunday & several people were around.

Everyone who comes here evidently flys directly out of Corumbá by plane. Hence, we could not convince the manager, altho we thought we did, that we did not need to change our plane reservations. We told him we were staying in Corumbá 2 nights, wanted to see the place and ^[[visit]] Urucum, and needed a reserv. at the Santa Monica. Yet after the plane arrived his wife came & said we should send our tickets to town for new reservations.

Tom went through it all again.

We were scheduled to take a boat trip at 3:00 -- we were ready & out birding; but not until ~ 4:30 did the guide call us to the boat. He said he waited because it was so hot. Indeed it was; It is 85[[degrees]]f now at 9 PM - must have been 95[[degrees]] & overcast w no breeze in pm. Just before we left I discovered I was bleeding! "Menstruating!" Blood on my white slacks. I remembered that this is the day I stopped my heavy dose of hormones, so this must be the "spotting" predicted. I will watch it carefully. It is either that or something much worse. It looked rather severe, but
