Seated and ready for dinner [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] near the pool at the Copa Palace, we had already ordered a caipirinha and a campari when we learned that feijoada is served there only on Saturday noon. We decided we would go elsewhere after our drink. Then the waiter persuaded us that feijoada is traditionally a Saturday noon dish, and we would not find it anywhere. We were not all that eager to pound the streets anyway, filled with shoeshine boys, so we took our menus back and ordered dinner. I had a splendid sole "dugliere" and, with an excellent caipirinha full of ice, enjoyed my dinner immensely. Walked home safely afterward - turned in about 11:30.

Roused out at 7:30 and the sight of joggers going past on the mosaic sidewalk prompted Tom to go out & run. He started first, then I went out for a brisk walk. We met out there and he was ready to come in before I was. Had a lovely breakfast. The waiter simply brought us each a plate with a slice of mamao, one of abacaxi, and a peeled orange. Then a selection of breads, and coffee. A couple from New York, in Brazil for a medical convention in Sao Paulo, sat at next table and struck up a conversation with us.

About noon we took a taxi to the Jardin Botanica to bird. Strolled a few feet and were seeing new and beautiful birds every few minutes. Waxbills, purple throated euphonia, green-headed tanagers - parrots &

humming bird & several others we haven't identified. Rode back along Ipanema Beach, which was very, very crowded. Much built up from what we remember. The view toward Gavea is stunning as ever, though.

Light lunch of gazpacho - palimito soups, omelette for me and crepes for Tom - stuffed w. chicken and mushrooms. Finished about 3:00 and had one hour before we were due at the Clinic to see Dan. Rode to Botafogo through the old 1892 tunnel and arrived at Dan's door at 3:57. America opened it and greeted us with enthusiastic abraços. She kept exclaiming that I haven't changed, and Tom hasn't. She has, a little. The recent months have worn her down. Dan was in a chair grinning from ear to ear and glad to see us. He is thin, gray, and worn, and had his legs all bound in Ace bandages. We moved close and had a lovely talk -- about our trip, and Corumbá, and his condition, and the Seymour Is. storm, and Tom's meeting me in P. Arenas. Danny joined us after a bit -- looking completely different from Dan, whom he resembled as a child. He remembers little about Angola except being ridden around Nova Lisboa by a native boy riding a bicycle. It was great seeing Dan and America again. We stayed about 1 1/2 hours & then took our leave, promising to come back. We invited America to dinner w. us here at the Ouro Verde. She will come if she reasonably can.

Light supper ~ 8:30 at Leme Palace coffee shop. I had a club sandwich, from which I tried to extract the lettuce, and a vanilla milkshake w. vanilla syrup streaking the inside of the glass.

On the sidewalk outside we saw women with
