[[underlined]] Tuesday, April 9. [[/underlined]] Were aroused by a 6:45 am call and went down to breakfast shortly after 7:00 in order to be ready for an 8:10 bus tour to Corcovado and Floresta Tijuca. We spent the next hour picking up passengers at other hotels, all down the beaches from here to Leblon, to the new Hilton, and on to Barrao Tijuca and the Intercontinental. Saw glamourous enclaves at sites where we remember only wild beaches. Where, in fact, we spent a happy Sunday flying kites with the Precions & others.

Took the cog railway up Corcovado, which was all clouded in. Saw several good birds in the woods, however. Tropical songbirds, bananaquit, sogorea tanager, 2 hummingbirds.

Had a nice ride through the forest to the [[Corcatuha??]] at entrance to Floresta Tijuca. Only now do I realize how enormously fortunate I was to have the many rides to the Floresta with Mrs. Olivera long ago. She & America had full use of Avelino's driver, and they took me all over Rio & up to Petrofabi repeatedly. And did the same for mother & Mrs. Rove. That is how I really got to know the lovely parts of Rio. We also had great times shopping.

Back to hotel about 1:15, we had a fine lunch of the cold buffet. Then felt so lazy we did nothing until time to visit Dan again, about 4:20. America had just arrived, and Danny was there ~ all day.

Dan was in bed. They had thought he could go home and tested whether he could urinate without a catheter. He could not, so it is uncertain how long

he will be in the clinic.

It was a little harder to talk w. him while he was lying flat (w. his feet up). But a lively conversation ensued w. Danny about his travels to Libya and Nigeria -- Egypt, and elsewhere for the Balser Co -- Oil Drilling Equipment. We tried to persuade America to have dinner w. us, but she wanted to wait there to talk w. the doctors. She is quite wound up w. all her responsibilities.

Once again we took a taxi home from the heart of Botafogo. This time at ~ 6:15 when it was already dark. Sat outside at the comfortable Ouro Verde bar & had a caipirinha each ^[[w. little peanuts]] -- were driven inside by light rain - had another between us, then upstairs & collapsed. We might have slept thru the night had not America called at 8:20 to say the tomograph may be fixed tomorrow, in which case Dan will have his scan, so she won't join us for lunch tomorrow. That roused us out -- we showered & dressed up and went down for another elegant meal -- veau escallope w asparagus & lettuce. Lets see how that effects me. It was [[double underlined]] so [[/double underlined]] good.

[[underlined]] Wednesday, April 10 [[/underlined]]

The morning we decided to see the heart of Rio. Our doorman offered us a Taxi Luxa w. English-speaking driver. We did not really want a tour or think we needed English, but, on the way to the Cathedral Novo he described the sections we were going through -- Some being leveled & some old areas saved or restored as national landmarks. He was the sort we probably
