when he learned Allan could sleep in his room.

Dan is a great raconteur and told Tom all about Leonard Clark and his book [[underlined]] The Rivers Ran East [[/underlined]]. Which we will look for. I saw it years ago and thought little of it, but will reconsider.

Back home (Ouro Verde) Tom started out feeling great, then sunk into an annoyed state because he's mad at Pan American sending us through Miami & forcing us to wait a whole day in New York; Mad because he thinks he was charged too much at lunch; and rather mad because I didn't want another splendid meal today. I decided I could eat one, however, so we shaved & dressed up for the Ouro Verde dining room, where I had broiled namorado, mixed vegetables (lovely --cooked in butter), and chocolate sundae.

I developed my own annoyance by reading Fodor's guide for the 1st time and learning of several Rio jewelers of the Horta variety and that we walked right past [[Marimmo's??]] gem museum at 25 Av. Rio Branco this very morning. What magnificant cat's eye tourmalines might I have found at Schupp's, Ernani & Walter, Gregory & Sheehay, Edwins. And at what low cost? I'll never learn. Don't look back. But the timing was poor anyway. I had to place order early if I wanted things set, and we were not about to go through big hassles Sat & Monday.
I will collect my jewels tomorrow. I hope the settings are good.

[[underlined]] Thursday, April 11. Going home. [[/underlined]]

9:22 at Galeon Airport awaiting 11 PM departure for New York.

I woke up about 4:00 am, went to bathroom & then put in ear plugs. The next thing I knew, Tom was walking in the door in his running togs. It was broad daylight, a beautiful morning, and seven o'clock. Time to get up and go to breakfast. Had mamão, orange and [[underlined]] banana [[/underlined]] for a change - a sweet, small Brazilian banana.
