BALLOON CORPS FOR ARMY
Lieutenant Lahm May Be Appointed Head of New Service.

HERALD BUREAU,
No. 1502 H STREET, N. W.,
WASHINGTON, D. C., Tuesday.

Organization of a balloon corps as a regular branch of the army is under consideration by War Department officers. It is proposed to create a company of officers and men whose duty it will be to operate balloons and to devote their time to special study in such a way as to make them experts, who may be called upon to direct the use of balloons throughout the army.
It is understood that already the names of officers qualified to take charge of this balloon company, the headquarters of which will be at Fort Omaha, Neb., are under consideration. Of these the name of First Lieutenant Frank P. Lahm, Sixth cavalry, is most prominently mentioned. His exploit in winning the long distance race from France to England for the Bennett Cup gives him first place among army ballooners.

St. Louis is this Summer to be the Headquarters for Air Voyagers Owing to Its Great International Balloon Races Next Fall - Interesting Infancy of a Growing Science
----
Sorento, Ill., March 20. - J. K. Campbell, the aeronaut, who sailed from St. Louis to this point one day recently in six hours in much gratified with the conduct of his huge machine.
Campbell was unaccompanied on the flight. H. E. Honeywell, his partner, who had intended making the ascension with him, decided at the last minute not to go.
The trip was made without special incident or mishap. At times the balloon attained a tremendous height. The voyage through the air was made by way of experiment, and Campbell appeared delighted over the result.
"It was in every way a success," he said, "and demonstrates that the Areo club people acted wisely when they selected St. Louis for the great international balloon races next October."
Campbell formerly resided in Los Angeles, Cal., and is a professional aeronaut, about 30 years of age. He has never experimented with dirigible balloons, aeroplanes or airships. He has never met with an accident. Two years ago he gave up his residence in Los Angeles for St. Louis, and since that time has been engaged in the manufacture of balloons with Honeywell.
The trip from St. Louis to Sorento is described as a delightful one. The clearness of the atmosphere, combined with a moderate temperature, made conditions almost ideal for an ascention.
