is in the West Washington Market, on the west side below Fourteenth Street.

The transactions among the wholesale dealers amount to $10,000,00 in a year. The waters of the State include 30,000 acres reserved as oyster beds, the leading towns in the industry being Princes Bay, Rockaway, and Oyster Bay. A fleet of 112 boats carrying from 400 to 3,500 bushels of oysters on a trip bring the bivalves to the New York markets. The beds in Delaware and Chesapeake Bays add their quota to the supply. and one-half public edifices which will be surpassed by few of the nations of the world. The offices for the Senate and House of Representatives on Capitol Hill will harmonize with the Capitol itself in general appearance, as will the one which will probably be completed for the Supreme Court of the United States in the near future. Next in importance to these will be the additions to what is termed the White House or Executive group. Lafayette Square is considered by the commission to be one of the best sites for the location of the Department of Justice which is now in quarters entirely inadequate for it.

The crowded condition of the State, War, and Navy departments has led to the proposal to separate these. One may have a home in connection with the newly created Department of Commerce, although provision may possibly be made for each individually. The new department buildings will occupy other portions of the square or its vicinity, and their design will be in keeping with the White House, as it is desired to make this the most conspicuous of the executive group. On the outer section of the Mall, but in positions where they will enhance and not detract from its general appearance, will be located the new buildings intended for the Department of Agriculture, the Smithsonian Institution, the Fish Commission, as well as other structures which are needed by the branches of the Government at present occupying parts of business blocks rented for the purpose.
