Dr. G. Brown Goode, Assistant Secretary

Sir:

I have the honor to transmit herewith the annual report of this Department for the year ending June 30, 1896.

In connection with the bibliography it should be noted that the special bulletin of the Museum, on Oceanic Ichthyology, has been printed (not published), and that part 1 of Bulletin No. 47, U. S. Nat. Mus. - Fishes of North America - , covering 1240 pages and comprising 1627 species, has been printed.

The most important work accomplished during the year towards the preservation of the collections was relabelling of nearly ^[[all]] the series contained in the fish hall cases.

All of the small receipts were duly installed, but the large U. S. Fish Commission collections received during the year have not yet been entered on our register.
