3. WHAT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN CARING FOR THE COLLECTIONS UNDER YOUR CUSTODY, i.e., IN THEIR PRESERVATION AN INSTALLATION?

The preservation of the collections has been carefully attended to; the bottled specimens have been kept covered with alcohol, and thousands of labels have been replaced during the year.

A considerable amount of space was secured in the fish hall cases by condensing the collections. This has been accomplished by placing a number of individuals of the same species, from the same place, into a single jar instead of having a separate jars for each example.

Large and valuable collections , results of explorations in the North Pacific by the Steamer Albatross, were bottled, labelled and installed during the year.

The distribution of specimens was unusually large; sets of deep sea fishes were sent to the leading Museums of Europe, and many miscellaneous sets to universities and colleges of this country.
