Nov. 25 Arrival in Hong Kong

lead the merry gaggle of children & were charming to watch. Met two Amer. doctors serving in the army Capt. Dr. Paul Lensky of Houston Texas & Dr. Vasil Truchly, New York.

Thursday - Nov. 25
Arrival in Hong Kong- also a vision of beauty. The many shaped small islands the different formations of the mountain tops against a cloud filled sky - City has less purity of character than Tokyo. Signs mostly in English - I miss the art expression of the caligraphy everywhere. It is like a sprawling big resort town. Island surrounded by sea & mountains.

Stopped - Miramar Hotel in Kowloon. Both Peninsula Hotel & the Miramar are in Kowloon - which is a ten minute ferry ride which costs 20 Hong Kong cents around 3 1/2 American cents & is delightful. Hong Kong has the big new office bldgs. & dept. stores.

Poverty much more evident than in Tokyo which is practically extinct in Tokyo. (I had seen only one in my week's stay) Here the coolies are barefoot, every child is taught to beg & follow one for blocks [[strikethrough]] at a [[/strikethrough]] In poorer sections of town, shops are open on street like Eastern Bazaars - clothes hung out on poles from balconies - native coolie [[?]] & families or women wearing short skirts slit up to the middle of the thighs (where is their modesty?)

Spent Day with the Hacohens -- ferried twice back & forth.

Lunched with Joan Zirinsky and her husband & father-in law at Restaurant Metropole - interesting cosmopolitan crowd.

Afternoon - window shopping. Spent quiet evening - bathed - unpacked & met the Sapirs who had dinner at the Miramar -

Wonderful view from the window
