No law practiced - lawyers not allowed to practice. Only a people court of justice exists. Women earn as much as men in factories. Canteens to feed workers, new housing, schools & nurseries for children, etc. I was not impressed nevertheless. For the percentage who have benefitted - Gorzenko has shown only too well - the true condition of the people.

Eve - cocktail party at the British Embassy. Mr. Gor-Booth - as charming & informal as his wife. Friendly & hospitable as could be. Was pleased to hear I would like to paint his wife & showed me their 3 Elizabethan paintings as well as a 100 yr. old ptg. of Trafalgar Square - looking like an old Italian ptg.

Met Mrs. Curly - who told me to look them up in Rome at British Embassy. Mrs. Welsing, who may join the outdoor ptg. group on Sunday. & has invited me for dinner on 30th. Also Mrs. Scroggs - born Berlin - wife

of British Commercial Embassy etc.

Dinner at Strand Hotel afterwards. Saw many people who were at Embassy party - Hotel owned by Armenians, staffed with Indians, in white long tunics with Fez.

Letter from Emily - depressed me in spite of wonderful news of the baby. I feel guilty at being here - not to be with her during these difficult months. On the other hand, my reaction shows me I am not quite as strengthened as I thought and still need to be away & the objectivity it gives me.

12 PM.

Finished Gouzenko's 'Fall of a Titan' a little disappointing.
