Exaggeration, distortion & (simplification) used as means to put over the artist's feeling about his theme rather than merely represent objectivity. AW -(compare with the musician who is merely a technical virtuoso & the artist known for his interpretation of the music) And simplification with the aim of getting at essentials & the inner being of their subjects rather than the outer appearances as a camera might record it. Or, as the impressionists had done, through the fleeting atmospheric aspects of landscape or the effect of light in breaking up objects & scenes & presenting the momentary aspects of figures. This emphasis on the individual artists' reactions has been of extreme importance, in American Art & is to be traced in the work of so called American Abstract Expressionists such as Pollock & de Kooning. 141 Sweeney - Young Guard.
