AM - Three hours - on two black & white versions of figures at a street pump. Not quite satisfied - but at least I was thinking in the right direction, finally.

Aft. Drove to market with Dorothy for her Christmas shopping for the people of the compound - it is a responsibility the several families & their children. In the year & a half since they are here there has been one birth, one death of a child, one miscarriage & so far a seeming successful pregnancy -

Stopped also to see cottage industries at the Strand - the hand woven silks & cottons. (May take home samples for Lord & Taylor) One has to see the govt. agency the textiles are under govt. supervision & they are trying to expand the textile production. Also saw the jewels and asked to have a large topaz stone for Emily as gift - either as pendant or brooch with earrings to match. The smoky topaz & the yellow

Eve - spent quietly at home helping decorate the Christmas tree for the children.

Afternoon - 1 P.M. Christmas luncheon with Mr. Mrs. Banks (new to Rangoon & Louis' staff) with their two handsome boys, Steve & Jeff - 9 1/2 & 11.

At 3, garden party, Tetecheff (Alexis) with wife & lovely daughter of 10, Marcia, the Robinsons, Mary Caudle Louis' secretary, English Mr. Bell, Japanese, Mr. & Mrs. Takahachi, the Irving Lichts & Julien Licht. Mr. & Eleanor Nelson, etc. Jerry Alter, Philip Hauser, Jean Claude Antonic - all of World Bank Mission as well as Dr. Barsch (born in Bohemia - large eyed, oriental looking, hairy &
