drawings I had made to illustrate my method of working. I had taken Lucy La Maung's portrait drawing - realistically studied - a line drawing, an Expressionistic wash drawing & a final cubist treatment in line with the message I quoted by Gide - to hold to the thread of tradition & discipline & thereby gain inspiration to search for a personal direction in one's work. I had brought seven drawings in all - & was glad I'd had the idea to do them. They were studied & discussed - & I think were helpful.

Beata Welsing & Bracha Hacohen were both there. Beata thought the evening memorable - quite a compliment.

I had suggested again - against the artists' claim that there is no public for modern art that they must earn their livelihood - that they form a club to exhibit their works privately in Hla Shain's garden

for example, from time to time, inviting a few cultured guests & having discussions about their work & so little by little, create an ever widening circle of interest.

Eventually - the govt. sponsorship they seek, would be forthcoming.

Also brought up issue of letter to Mr. Rashid. about eliminating the 60% duty on art supplies.

Suggested an annual open air exhibit of the artists works in the public square - as they have in Washington Square - as means of arousing public interest 'Advertizing it' etc. in city.

When I mentioned their tradition of stylization in their Buddhas - the use of exaggeration - distraction, & simplification - they were unable to relate these problems to contemporary art. It will take time
