A.M. Tired. Depressed about news from home. Please God. papa will be well. May decide to leave much sooner, after all. Letter home.

3 PM - Going for a sail on the lake with Lenorae Scott, pleasant girl working as secretary for K.T.A.

Lovely & peaceful on the lake learned something about sailing. As we came in a 6 - the sun was setting & the silhouette of the trees was too beautiful for words, against the sky. The rounded tree tops - the shore along reminded me of the Japanese landscape & then, driving home the palms & other tall old trees took on a massive splendor in the golden light.

Evening - Buffet dinner at Mr Mrs Sein (Louis' landlord) one of the wealthy men in commerce & landowner. It was an all Burmese party with the exception of Louis, Myself, Mr. & Mrs. Johnson & one

other Englishman. The women all sat in one corner of the huge room from which all furniture had been removed but the chairs. It is not correct for women to mingle with the men - not drink & dance. Smoking is their only vice. They were a colorful group, fairly blazing with jewels, one woman wore a long rope, casually, of diamonds, besides her diamond bracelets rings, earings & diamond buttons.  Anothers' ring & buttons of diamonds were fabulous in size & brilliance. I like the fact that the older women dress their hair with flowers & are as colorful in appearance as the younger group. In spite of the one style of dress - they all manage a definite individuality in their use of color, fabric, design & jewels. A catered Chinese meal was served - with many delicacies. The Burmese women are so hospitable. The guests rushing to light my cigarette & serve me personally. I spoke to a
