some addresses for Israel, since they are leaving in 8 days for China & I may have left before they get back to Rangoon.

5.30 Tea with the Carmens. She was in a sad, tearful mood - gentle & charming. I was glad to see her so - she can be really sympathetic - and he as well. Had dinner with them - & then looked at their photos - taken in Paris & Italy. I hope she will be well - she is dangerously ill, it seems to me, perhaps very near the end, I'm afraid.

AM - Portrait of Dorothy & children
After lunch - drawing
3 o'clock - Hacohens for tea & addresses in Israel. I was touched by their warmth & friendliness. Both gave me addresses of their brothers & sisters as well as close friends & govt. officials. My stay there will surely be pleasant in all three cities.

Jean Claude
P.M- Antoine & Philip Hauser for dinner. Then to Boulwer's farewell cocktail party. They are leaving for Australia after 4 yrs. in Rangoon. Had nice talk with Beata who was there. She told me they had sent my drawing of little Andrew to Vienna as a gift to her 80 year old father, who has never seen the child. - After the party drove to the Strand with Hauser to visit Julien & Ellen Licht. Was glad I went because she was not feeling well - perhaps a touch of malaria & is leaving for Dublin on Thursday - so this was goodbye.

In spite of the fact that I know one can never question the how & why of two people coming together - still Bracha & David - Julien & Ellen - Dr. Jacobson & his wife in Bangkok - are three couples who make me wonder. - What opposite & balancing characteristics made it possible for these to make their lives more or less successfully fulfilled. Something a little fantastic
