Dinner & cocktails at the Barnes' afterwards. I was so tired after my day - (Had painted after lunch, on my return, then finished Orwell's 'Burmese Days & started 'In Two Latitudes', Simenon. I could hardly keep awake in spite of Mr. Barnes & Col. Pettit's conversation at dinner. This was also in honor of Jerry McCarthy of firm of Knappen, Tippetts, Abbott, McCarthy, Engineers, Industrial Development Corp. 98 Cheape Road, Rangoon.

AM- Rested in bed & started reading, Hemingway's "Green Hills of Africa.'

Lunch at home for World Bank - Dr. Gerald Alter, Jean-Claude Antoine, Dr. Anthony Bosch.

Max Lerner & Alsop.

syndicated press. Alsop is friend of Bob Nathan. Also, later this evening David Hacohen will come with Bracha & some newly arrived people of the Israeli Legation, who I am looking forward to meet.

7.30 P.M. Completely fabulous evening. Dorothy & I had Max Lerner & Joseph Alsop all to ourselves for dinner, since Louis had to be with Raskin. Conversation sparkled. I find Alsop, a second sort of Sir Cedric Hardwicke, - wonderful, dry, clear speaking voice, beautiful hands which he knows full well how to use, brilliant mind & wry wit, sardonic humor, analytical. As Hacohen described him, "this goy knows more than all our clever jews together!!
