A.M - 9.30-1 o'clock - painting.

Napped with Marian after lunch.

Visited Baddeley's with Bo lit ga & Hla Shein to show them their art collection with the idea of showing them in an art exhibit. Max Lerner came to dinner at 7.30. Interesting man, good conversation. He must be a good teacher - he loves to talk & seems never to tire. We drove to the Strand by 1 AM. Will pick him up Friday morning at 10.30 to drive him to the airport. He has not yet decided on India or Formosa. Perhaps he said that because he thought I might have taken his invitation to go to India with him seriously. -Which I certainly hadn't dreamed of doing. Perhaps he sensed that on my part too, & this was a graceful out for him. However, in spite of it - he is a likeable, sympathetic & complete personality in his own way.

The best anecdote he told was of how he had gotten his PH.D. Has never written a thesis. Must have been considered an unusually brilliant student to have his professor call him into his office, unexpectedly, one day, & start asking him questions. This lasted some time, & then he noticed that one by one, all the members of the faculty had dropped in - each one entering the discussion. The whole quiz lasted for some three hours, at which time he realized what was happening. They then asked him to leave & after a short while, the office door opened, out came the professors & congratulated him on having gotten his degree!
