Went at 4 to Pan American to arrange passage home.

Stopped off at Ceylon Embassy for tea with Anil de Silva. She is a friend of Picasso & is sending him the owl & other papier maché toys she bought in Pauk-Ko-Ko- similar to those he has painted on his ceramics.

Bob Nathan stopped in at dinner for a talk. Afterwards, in the library - Louis paid his staff their monthly wages. It was an experience to see. His chauffeur, 'Copar' who was formerly a business man & is leaving his job for an operation for hernia "shikoed" Louis, 3 times. (Got on his knees & bowed his head to the ground - as they reverence their priests)
'Hassein' the garden watch man, came in bent forward double.

When he asks anything - he touches his hands together, as in prayer.

Then the gardener, with a stiff salute at the door, & upon reaching Louis' desk, another salute, with his arms stiff at his sides.

The cleaner, too, bent forward double in the gentlest, most obsequious manner. Are quietly, in bare feet, entering the presence of the master.

Mary - our gentle washer & nanny - only 28 - not married - taking care of her sick mother. leaves us tomorrow. I gave her, as gift, the handwoven spread I had bought to take home - & wished her mami well.
Gertume's (the head Nanny) husband, will take 'Copars' place as chauffeur. He is dour, taciturn. She is not too happy with him & has been supporting him for several months while he has been out of work. She, too, is gentle & sweet with the children. She particularly loves Louisa & is proud
