At least so it seemed to me, at first study. I shall have to return & study it further. Took horse & cab through the city & the magnificent park. Natural, evergreen trees, trees in bloom everywhere, violet, white & Japanese rose trees, with sculptures about every few feet of space. Enchanting!

After lunch, Jan joined me on a bus tour, which included the Colosseum & the Forums, the three Basilicas: S. Maria Maggiore St. John Lateran & St. Paul's - Outside - the walls. Passed the old bridges over the Tiber - the old city walls.

April 13, Rome

old "Appian Way" to visit the Catacombs. One would not like to get lost in their dark sombre maze of paths. To think of these massive stones being cut layer upon layer (level after level) so deep under ground, is really to envisage the solemnity & eternity of death.

Eve. Jan invited me to dinner. Went to the 'Cisterne' a typical Italian Restaurant in the old Roman quarter - with good wine & four musicians making good music & song. Spent a very pleasant evening, with Jan buying flowers, ordering photographs & paying the musician to serenade us. Charming.

Sent Letter home & one to Louis, as well.
