478 - Rome Monday April 18 perhaps on his wife's side - because he drives a beautiful car, which is a luxury here, I imagine. The galleries showed only handsome paintings (nothing avant garde or exciting) mostly on the correct, safe, academic side of the fence. Disappointing. Afterwards, we drove to a little country inn about half hour from the city for an omelette & wine - out in the sun. Charming. Assen read my hand - & said some remarkable things - to wit - "A new life begins for me now. Till the present, I was not too happy - (the family was, but not I) My life went in different directions - without aim. Now, fortune [[strikethrough]] bek [[/strikethrough]] beckons - I have force & purpose & will find happiness for the first time. A long life line. No marriage again. Difficult for me to have children - might need an operation. My life has been lived as a dream, in spite of my capabilities in a practical, realistic world - which have not interested me. The one trouble & weakness, has been 479 Rome. Tues. April 19 my pedantic nature - given to thinking too much instead of trusting to my intuition and emotion. Brought me to the hotel in time for dinner at 8- Another letter home & to bed. Tuesday- April 18 Restful day - AM - twice to office of CIT to arrange for tour. Then to have my hair washed (an unaccustomed luxury) - Back to change money -(623 to the dollar instead of 620 & 614) lunch - to nap for an hour - Back to CIT office to pay up & pick up my intinerary. 77,000 lira in all - expensive. Still, it seems to me to be worth it and I can't leave without having seen more of Italy than Rome, itself. This evening, unexpectedly, Mr. Sasson called. His wife had left this morning for Israel & he was free to drive me about the city. So- I've also seen Rome by night. It was lovely. We ended up in the Ristorante' Basilica "Ulpia" Piazzo Foro Traiano 2 - Tel. 689.980 - An old cave converted into a restaurant - beautiful to see - situated near Victor Emanuel Bldg.
