such marvelous dexterity about the corner stones of the old buildings - the water softly lapping against their moss green waters. The women & children of the canals, little boys lying flat on their stomachs, & holding a long wire down into the water, perhaps to catch fish - playing water games with long sticks or [[shoving?]] bottles caps on the square pavements. The train trip was tiring; I dozed off & on between periods & admiring, as always the lovely landscape of Italia. Arrived at 6.10 - & found a letter from Emily waiting for me at the hotel. All about the baby & the babies' furniture. It made me happy. Then, changed & dressed for the Israeli Independence Day Reception at the Grand Hotel to which Mrs Sasson had invited me.
