500 Wed. April 27. Roma.

Had a little talk then with Enrico [[Shuka?]] Italian author, whom I could not understand but that he thought me 'molto bella!

Early to bed by 10 PM - to rest my ankles I could have waited for the reception to end & gone out with [[A?]] Sasson - at his invitation, bu thought the rest was necessary & would do me more good. I was right & felt better after 12 hrs sleep till 10 AM.

Thursday April 28 - Rome -
11 AM - Went to the CIT office to complain of my bill - I may get a refund - after speaking with Manager - Mr. Mayer. After - the tram (78 or 66) to Amer. Express - no mail - & a pleasant walk & ride back to the hotel for lunch. Rome is even more beautiful than I thought - with charm, life & movement after the severely beautiful Florence. The traffic is characteristic of the temperament of the people - Quarelistic & individual, each one riding madly in his own fashion - a wonder - I have seen no accidents!

501 Thursday, April 28- Rome.

at 3 PM - A phone call from [[Assen Perkoo?]] - to invite me for a drive to the sea & to see his large nude in his garden. His house is a simple stucco bungalow, small, from the outside. The interior is a jewel of taste. All wooden walls & ceilings - beautifuly furnished with fine, old antiques - brass, china, glass, paintings. A paradox - He looks like a healthy, simple, sturdy Bulgarian peasant - His tastes - exquisite & refined. On the way, there & back, told me of his life & childhood. Left without mother when he was 8 & his brother 4 - with a still younger sister. His father remarried & was shot by the Fascists at 38 yrs of age for his communistic activities in the Agriculture Party. Perkoo, himself, at 16 - became a fisherman - & active in their Communist group (while his brother was employed as musician) The group was finally discoved - several arrests made & Perkoo imprisoned for 8 months. Still bears burn scars of torture on his ankles & feet.
