May 14- Lisbon.

and bags everywhere & took me in his cab from the airport to the Hotel Florida Park American had no reservation for me. He called me 3 times & then a fourth time in the evening, to say how he regretted not being able to invite me out. He is here on business & has to dine with these people.

So much the better, I need to rest after so little sleep last night.

By the time I unpacked & had lunch it was 3.45. Too late to take a tour. Took a taxi to see the Museum of Ancient Art. Fine building - well lit, handsomely installed. Fine works but so unimportant after having seen the Prado.

Afterwards from 6 to 7- took a cab & drove through the city.

Restauradores Square, Rossio, St. George's Castle (850 yrs. old) with a wonderful view of the entire city & the river & mountains in the distance

Passed the Popular Art Museum. St. Rogue's Church, Port Wine Institute & most important, drove through the old city (Arabic in architecture) such narrow streets only wide enough for the cab to go through, with tiny shops on each side & people staring from every side & laughing with curiosity. Then to Edward VII Park & a visit of the Greenhouse, saw the Bull-Ring, the New Quarters of the city handsome modern houses in handsome pastel shades of rose, green, ochres, etc. Belvedere of our 'Lady of the Monte' - Commerce Square, Museum of Coaches, Jeronimos Monastery - Social Quarters, etc Square of the Ministries.

Came back, tired, to the hotel for dinner & went to bed by 12 P.M. after reading & writing up the past two days in my diary. - (Left a note for Mazzuchi at the desk, thanking him for his hospitality and kindness.)
