This meet at Los Angeles was to be international in character. That is to say, foreign aviators could participate. The price named in our contract included a [[strikethrough]] permit [[/strikethrough]] license for foreign fliers.

The Los Angeles authorities told me that there was considerable dissatisfaction with the management by Mr. Ferris and the same men who sponsored the meet a year ago, [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] would [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] have [[strikethrough]] anything [[/strikethrough]] nothing to do with another meet if Mr. Ferris had anything to do with it. I saw at once where a split might occur and some of the best talent would be for Ferris while the balance would go with us.

I called on Mr. Max Ihmsem, general manager for the Los Angeles Examiner and laid the matter before him and asked for his advice. He wanted to know just what my relations were with Mr. Ferris. I told him there was no connection whatever and furthermore, there would be no connection for this meet. He seemed relieved to know this. He advised me to see Mr. William M. Garland who had been the chairman of the previous meet and ask his advise.

Mr. Garland stated that he had all he wanted of aviation meets the year previous and did not care to take on any further responsibilities. I explained that Mr. Ihmsem was interested and had sent me to him. After much discussion, he made the statement that if the Examiner would print an editorial suggesting that he head a committee that he would then consider the matter.

I called on Mr. Ihmsem and reported progress which seemed to please him. The next morning the Examiner printed an editorial suggesting that a committee be formed to hold another annual meet, and that the committee be headed by Mr. William M. Garland. That did it. The committee was formed of practically the same men as last year with Mr. Garland as chairman. It was now possible to make a contract as the new committee had raised considerable money.
