ADDRESS ONLY
THE DIRECTOR, NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

October 1, 1941.

MEMORANDUM for Mr. Wirth:

Immediately after leaving office, I made contact with Major Newberry, of the Air Corps, and stated that we wanted the Fairchild airplane. He ascertained that the machine had been delivered to Training and Operations Department at Chanute Field, and was no longer available.

The suggestion was made that we address a letter to the Chief of Air Corps, requesting an airplane be transferred to this Department. An effort would be made to secure an airplane suitable for our requirements.

I would suggest that we do this at once, and I will make an effort to get Beachcraft twin-engined airplane capable of carrying a load equal to or better than our Fairchild airplane, in which event we will keep the Beachcraft and deliver the Fairchild to the Indian Service.

If this meets with your approval, I would like to carry the letter personally to the Chief of Air Corps and explain in detail the use of the plane and the object of securing it in this manner.
