Well now that the enclosed yellow sheet lists the events of the past week I can plunge in here. Ed is leaving for good today & I probably won't see him again. He has been very nervous & anxious about getting into the right [[strikethrough]] part of [[/strikethrough]] Dept. of the army or navy, & last night Merle Armitage & Eero called him a coward & said he should do whats right for his country instead of whats right for him. This made a fine parting set up for him when he feels pretty low about leaving - & the poor guy came in last night over & over to try to see me alone because he knew I was still his friend. He's only 23 & brilliant, but his brain is way ahead of his emotional stability & his experience which causes an odd sense of values. He sees all the details & forgets the whole, & consequently he's a mass of complicated worries. What he does from now on will prove whether he's a coward or
