LEE KRASNER

DECEMBER 14, 1977

Evening lecture presented at the New York Studio School

Art:
- Art is history.
- Art is as old as man
For me -Art is [[strikethrough]] one of the means of expression [[/strikethrough]] as essential [[strikethrough]] as [[/strikethrough]] as [[strikethrough]] I take [[/strikethrough]] breathing [[strikethrough]] for granted [[/strikethrough]]

On Recognition:
-Some artists have never received any recognition. ...say that I've not received very much (i.e. recognition), but there is not enough bitterness, anger or resentment to make me stop. Working.

On Painting:
-In the Renaissance the space was [[strikethrough]] way back there [[/strikethrough]] drawn back to a single point on the horizon (perspective); in Cubism the space [[strikethrough]] was up here. [[/strikethrough]] is frontal
-Caligraphy is something that I've always been interested in.
(on back) [[strikethrough]] -I had a period I call "Grey Period"...just masses of grey..of paint of color, In my lifetime I've just had one grey period. It was a state of anxiety that built up and built up - it was that one grey period...and, boy, that it was a hard period to go through. Then Jackson Pollock came and I worked through it. [[/strikethrough]]
-I've stopped working several times for periods of time. I don't carry guilt because I'm not working: I just want to be around when it opens. up.
