alternative physical environments to house their shared activities. Despite the differences in political orientation, the collective kitchens of the Cooperative Housekeeping Movement, the Urban Settlement Houses, Women's Clubs, and the Woman's Building of 1893, are 19th century structures which the Woman's Building (1973- ) claim as its history.

As a part of the second wave of feminism, in the 1960's and 1970's, women creators gathered together to focus upon many of the same needs for discovering and sharing personal, professional, political experience and information."

With the awareness that women's creative experience was not recognized or validated in the dominant culture and that women creators were integral to forming a new vision of the future for all women, the Woman's Building opened its doors.

The Woman's Building is the hub of cultural activity for women in the arts and is recognized internationally for its innovations in the areas of graphic design, performance, and writing. Feminist art has its roots in the early work and educational training ground of the Feminist Studio Workshop at the Woman's Building. "Feminist Art" is now being seen as an actual movement in art history and is affecting the mainstream of contemporary society in a way the arts haven't in many years. All the educational programs at the building - extension, Summer Art Program, Feminist Educators Workshop - are designed to challenge women to reach their full potential and to express their own sense of personal power through the creation of feminist art.
