THE WOMAN'S BUILDING

The Los Angeles Woman's Building opened its doors in 1973, 80 years after the opening of the Woman's Building at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Both buildings were created by women to provide a public space for exhibiting women's art and culture. Today's building has established itself as an educational institution. Through the educational programs, women learn skills essential for individual growth, the creation of art and culture, and the realization of their vision of the future. The building is a bridge for women to move from the personal to the professional life, and bring with them their own proud heritage of women's accomplishments.

Housed in a three story brick building at 1727 North Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles, the Woman's Building stands as a landmark to a strong women's culture. Co-founded by graphic designer Shelia deBretteville, artist Judy Chicago, and art historian Arlene Raven, the Woman's Building has expanded to include many other women who now administrate and teach in the varied educational programs.

We offer a full time educational program that includes apprenticeships, workshops, public outreach projects, teacher training and classes. In addition, the NEW MOVES PROGRAM offers scholarships to disadvantaged women and creates projects outside
