Thus, the Woman's Building provides the female student with a complete ecosystem of education from which she may choose, according to individual desire and need. She may choose from a variety of learning formats, programs with degree and non-degree options on a full or part-time basis. For example, if she is pursuing the vocational goal of graphic design she may participate in workshops, apprentice with a professional, gain actual work experience in the graphics lab, see her work exhibited in the Community Galleries, learn from public reaction, and possibly have the satisfaction of having her work sold in the Arts Store. Because of the situational learning environment, she can gain competence in all areas as a beginning professional. At the Woman's Building, the student can actively create her own educational process, benefit from the formation and experience of female consciousness and community, and participate in the growth and survival of the institution itself: a pioneering effort which must remain responsive to female students' developing needs, innovations, and reforms.

This proposal presents a plan for the consolidation of what has up until now been a centrally operated group of seed projects (please see Institutional Information section which describes these unique programs.) These seed projects have met with great success, both from the viewpoint of students and from the national and international communities for whom the Building serves as a Women's Cultural Center. At this stage the projects must be more effectively and centrally administrated, the programs and resources therein more fully utilized, curriculum expanded, systems of educational process and program sharing with other institutions developed along with cost effective forms of sound financial planning, and the opportunity for this type of education better communicated to the student population at large.

The Woman's Building is particularly suited for this effort at developing more throough and effective forms for feminist based education. It is the only institution of its kind, has been refining its programs for five years, and retains an unheralded ability to attract top professionals as instructors and students from all over the world despite- up until now- relatively low salary and student recruitment budgets.

Expected Outcomes

At the end of the three year developmental program the expected outcomes for the project are these:

Effective administration resulting in more fully developed and expanded programs (wider curriculum) offered to a larger potential student body.

Greater cost-effectiveness of educational programs through improved utilization of existing resources and more effective financial planning. This would result in the survival of the Building as an alternative educational vehicles. The long range benefit to the student would be a greater offering and diversity of programs.
