I have required the schollars to furnish lights & fuel, which I found pressed upon some, who were struggling to feed [[decriped?]] parents or little children, while getting small wages themselves.

To relieve such, I have paid their proportion of the expense at times myself.

I am paying a heavy rent for the premises I occupy and, now, I most respectfully apply to you and ask that some portion of the rent for the above room be allowed me, [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] out of the funds set apart for fitting up rooms, & providing, for, the education of Freedmen. In occupying this room for a school I was obliged to surrender another room & now permit my cook to lodge in the school-room. Hence I am willing to allow four dollars per month of the rent, and ask that I receive the sum of six (6) dollars per month for the use of said room —

Very Respectfully
