E. Capt. St. Barracks Office Supt Washington D. C. May 24th 1867. Capt Wm M. Beebe Jr Local Supt. D. O Captain, The enclosed report by Dr Wheeler has been made at my suggestion. Since the grading of South A St. the grounds on which our privy stands is much lower than the grounds around it β the water sittles there, & the leakage of Privy boxes &c forms a pool of filth that we cannot get at to remedy the soil, the ground under the Privy being saturated I think best to remove it from the street, to the center of the grounds occupied by us. I would therefore respectfully request that a carpenter be employed to remove the Privy β & 500 feet of lumber & 20 lbs 12d nails be furnished. Respectfully Your obt Svte J. S. I am aware that you are doing all that is possible in the way of having it frequently cleaned out and limed β But I am satisfied that it will always be a nuisance where it is, and I would suggest as a necessary sanitary precaution that it be moved to the Centre of
