AFRICAN CIVILIZATION BUILDING.
DEAN STREET near TROY Avenue,
BROOKLYN, N.Y. July 18 1867

Bvt Brig Gen Charles H Howard

Dear Sir
The genteleman who has seated this Building is in my opinion an excellent mechanic and a very good christian man. He is a poor man; and needs some of the money before the work is completed. I think that he richly deserves it.

The work which he has already amounts strictly speaking to more than ($325) Three Hundred and Twenty Five Dollars' all that he as for now is $250. His name is J. S. Stevens and he is the most conscientious carpenter that I have met with in this city.

Very truly yours
