Mother Dear: Ruth is getting out for a couple of hours with Mrs. Henshaw and Lord knows she needs the change after three weeks of being tied down so strenuously. This letter will be mailed in Orange somewhere so you can have the latest news before the week ends.... Pete still has an ear draining and we don't know what it will do-- stop eventually or go into the mastold. Dr. Cott said last night (Thursday) that we could do no more than wait . it is being irrigated regularly and we are following the procedure which you know we used for me and, as I remember long ago, for Henry when we were at Pearl St., The part that makes us feel badly is that the boy has a had cough for which he is also getting some of Dr. Smiths' medication. This cough has lasted over a week now and is the really bad feature since, if the ear is going to clear at all we must get rid of the cough which is forcing further infection into the ear passage from the throat. For the past couple of nights his spells have been less severe and quick dosing with the medicine has given him, and us, a sleep through the rest of the night. His temperature has see-sawed up and down every day and yet has not been goin so high as the day wore on, as for instance Thursday night he registered 101plus and the first thing this (Friday) morning he was normal. What with therunning ear and the cough we dare not get him out in the sun where we most want to put him. We don't want to take any chances of putting him back--and that fool nurse who did as she pleased rather than as the doctor ordered is the cause in my opinion of at least one set back. All in all he is better than he has been since the second operation to date and we are trying not to be too downcast over the whole episode. Aunt Sarah is the only sane one of us here and without herewe couldn't carry on. Ruth is unrested these three weeks and I'm not much good with a pair of very poor legs coupled with an attempt to save a little by taking care of the lawn during my enfoeced "vacations" each week. On the whole it is lovely here at this place and I know of but one other place--the Centre--which makes mesatisfied---as long as it will last, that is. I didn't mean to upset you and cause you to phone the other day and we'll try to give you cheering news as often as either of us gets opportunity to write. All our love, and Pete says, "Hello" Your son,
