Swanton worked with the Alibamu in Okla. and Polk County, Tex. in 1906-1913, according to BAE-AR 28, p. 12; AR 30, p. 18; AR 32, p. 18; AR 33, p. 18; and AR 34, pp. 12-13.

Swanton's arrangement of the Alabama-English section is generally alphabetical, with many terms grouped together by stems. The cards have been stamped with consecutive numbers 1-2433, and Swanton's order has been preserved. Cards that had been clipped together now have a second number, beginning with 1 for the first in a clipped group (e.g., if cards 25-27 were found clipped together, they would now be numbered 25-1, 26-2, 27-3).

The Alabama-English section (with sequentially numbered cards) contains utterances identificable by a following number in parentheses. If the number does not begin with zero, apparently it refers to Swanton's page numbers in his rough field notes (MS 4151 "second set"). Numbers beginning with zero seem to refer to the "first set," MS 4151-- Karen Lupardus, August 18, 1978.

B.A.E. MS. No. 2435. Swanton, John R. Alabama-English Dictionary.

NOTE

The arrangement of the cards is Swanton's. It follows a generally alphabetical order, but contains a great many terms groups by stems. These were formerly clipped together with paper clips.
All the cards have now been numbered consecutively. Groups of cards formerly clipped together are indicated by a separate series of numbers; each card in the grouped series has been assigned a second number, beginning with 1 for the first in the series. For example, if cards 25-30 of the vocabulary were found grouped together, they would be numbered 25-1, 26-2, 27-3, 28-4, 29-5, and 30-6.
