A glider pilot cannot "drag" a field, then gun his way and around again; he cannot zoom, he cannot "stretch a glide" any more than the motored boys. Who ever coined that "stretch a glide" remark anyhow? A glider pilot in other words has be sure NOT to get into trouble. He is not pulled thru the air, he feels his way thru the air, about which he has studied what meteorology is known. Same thing, start a kid with water wings. A handicap to becoming a good swimmer. How about starting all [undelrined] learning to fly in a glider first?????
  When the dingible Los Angeles crashed had a Soaring pilot been on board, knowing better than to get int a storm, it might not have happened. In a thunderstorm as it approaches everyone knows there is that first strong gust...and there is also right in back of that up "thermal" a downdraft. Soaring by a German pilot at Elmira, caught in this, trying to cross country on the "thermal" was caught by his "tail" in the fierce down current. He landed with damage glider, some non-serious bloody injuries. 
  Warren Eaton from Norwich Conn. Head of his Pharmaceutical Co., founded the Soaring Society of America. A wonderful man later killed in Florida in a glider. A prince of men. 
  There was increasing need for a mt. top that would accommodate airplane and/or auto tow for launchings. This place called Big FLats known in Soaring as Harris Hill. In 1932 the latter partoof June early part of July as they are at this writing. 
  TOday there are cabin quarters/for pilots, safety for their gliders built by a combination of Federal & State FUnds. THere is an Administration bldg., a swimming pool right on the brow of the hill comparable to being the the cockpit of ones glider, same view of the beautiful valley. TOday there are hundreds of Glider Clubs, listed in the phone book. East, West, N. J., Long Island, Michigan, Illinois.
