NOTES ON THE COMING 2nd EASTERN OPEN SOARING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Plans and details are being worked out well in advance for the above-named contest which will be held at Harris Hill, Elmira, N.Y., from July 1st-7th. The meet is being sponsored by the Elmira Area Soaring Corporation and has been sanctioned by the Soaring Society of America.
It is expected that this contest will attract many pilots and ships from the eastern, midwestern and southern sections of the United States and Canada. It will be necessary for all pilots wishing to compete in this major meet to have obtained the dis-tance requirement of the Silver soaring badge. The meet will be designed to award a trophy and prize to the over-all contest winner and runner-up, based on total points earned dur-ing the contest. In addition, a handi-cap winner will be determined which will be based on a system developed around the glide ratio of the ships entered in the meet. There will be an entrance fee of $5 for each sail-plane.
Hugh H. Whitney has been select-ed as Competition Director and Robert K. Owens will serve as Contest Manager.
Additional information concerning this contest will be made available in the near future. Contest Rules and general information may be obtained in advance of the contest by writing EASC, 224 William St., Elmira, N.Y.
This is the second year that the Eastern Open Soaring Champion-ships have been held. The 1961 win-ner was Bernard Carris of Horse-heads, N.Y., flying the RJ-5 sailplane. Runner-up was Robert B. Smith from Bay Shore, L.I., N.Y. In addition, cash awards were made to the win-ners, provided they attained the 1961 Nationals.
