end of a bridge over the Hudson, not too far from the cottage. I was there with the motor running, and promptly at seven Mrs. R. drove up alone in an open Chrysler touring car and climbed in beside me. This was our first meeting. 
"The wind was from the north and the water was quite rough. This meant I would have to make a long taxi down the river in order to clear the high bridge. 
"I asked Mrs. R., 'Do you mind if I take off under the bridge? It will save a lot of time.' 
"'Why not?' she replied. 'It's all right with me, if it's all right with you.'
"So we did. We flew right under that bridge on the Hudson. I now make the claim of being the only pilot every to fly a President's wife under a bridge!"
After gaining some altitude and leveling off, Fogg settled down for what he hoped would be a safe and swift flight to nearby Auburn. He noticed that Eleanor was quite interested in the instruments and controls of the seaplane. 
"'Did you know that I took flying lessons from Amelia Earhart?' she announced to me.
"'No, I didn't,' I responded.
"'I was doing quite well,' she added. 'Franklin made me stop though. He said he had enough on his mind to worry about. He said he didn't want me taking any more flying lessons because he'd become a nervous wreck worrying about me flying  around in the sky.'"
Next, the First Lady requested permission to take over the controls.
Said Fogg: "To tell the truth, I didn't know what to do. At first, I was tempted to turn her down. But she was America's First Lady, and I didn't want to offend her. I let her take over the controls. If anything went wrong, I figured I could take charge again in a hurry.
