              WHERE NATURE LIVES
              (First of four parts)
                      by
               Bruce VanDervort

When you arrive at the Nature Center on Horseshore Bend Road for the first time, you will naturally notice the most obvious features such as a large wooded area, walking trails, the Interpretive Building, a log house, animals, and the abundance of life. Your first impression might be the natural beauty of the area -- an impression you will hopefully always associate with the Center. Upon other visits and readings you'll discover that the Center also has opportunities for outdoor education, cultural events, special interest groups and many other activities. But though greater knowledge and deeper appreciation comes the need to for more understanding. Questions may come to mind such as: What exactly is Brukner Nature Center? How did it get started? What lies in the future?

Behind all the natural beauty, the building, and programs at BNC is a structured organization, a rich history and a positive philosophy. An important part of the organizational structure is the Code of Regulations adopted by the Board of Trustees in 1973. Although the Code is too long to be completely printed in this publication, a certain word seems to dominate in the section of stated purposes. That word is "PROVIDE"------ provide natural areas, natural history and conservation education programs, outdoor laboratories, trails and facilities, and in general, provide opportunities for the study, enjoyment and awareness of nature's supreme importance to man.

In part two in the February GFG, we'll examine the history behind Brukner Nature Center.
