he took down the pictures, and when I looked over the aprtment(?) I cried. It was terrible, and just to make me appreciate how improved it was, George took the pictures out of the closet and the boys waxed so poetic and art-appreciative that the hideousness of them, became an asset,... to laughter. We had Sam and Clayt give up playing Pied Piper, and live with us. We divided up the blankets and comforts, put newspapers under the exscuses for mattresses and many a night George and I slept in part of our undies to keep warm. Buddie was over his whooping cough, but he didn't improve in the bleak lake shore winter weather. IN Herb and Phil Weaver came to visit and laughed with us at the pictures and the abode. [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] The card games became even more hilarious, [[strikethrough]] than ever, [[/strikethrough]] with the possibility of the deck wearing out [[underlined]] completely [[/underlined]], And what if our folks knew that we were playing with a [[underlined]] marked [[/underlined]] deck????? I found out how to get withered carrots and vegetables that made the stew taste just as good as the fresher ones, so we could have a greater amount, to dilute and that would go farther. Sam didn't even have an overcoat, and his wardrobe, until June 1925, consisted of matching new dark blue trousers to the shiny dark blue coat, then when that finally gave up hanging to-gether, a dark blue coat to match the half worn out trow. I worried over this, but he said he thought clothes were simply a silly necessity, and someday he would let me take him and the "profits" into the city and help him buy a real wardrobe.( I had gotten George out of wearing green suits and terrible green striped silk shirts, chiefly because they wore out, and I could shop for him better nfinancially, and he agreed, in taste.) Well, we made believe we were dressed for dinner, I put candlesticks on the table, my trousseau madeira linen, the "silverware" from the Waco, Texas, dime store, and we made believe we were at Delmonico's or Sherry's in N.Y. It was great fun and when we were all to-gether
