eating stew, or muffins, or playing cards, we were truly happy... at least I was. No one believed in airplanes ...but ourselves. [[?]] Alice Smith, wife of physician, invited us to some grand "feeds", with what I mistakenly called "De-Haviland china" but we were proud and made it a point only to accept when we had enough at home to eat. The Doctor played the cello, and Alice the piano. This always [[strikethrough]] me so much good [[/strikethrough]] pleased me for I was very fond of good music, and Alice sang well too. That winter, I asked andtfound out, what kind of store had three balls hanging over it. It was a store, where the boys were able to borrow money on their High School graduation watches. Moral:Always give your graduating child a good watch, our parents did. [[?]] One of the lake steamers had a cook , who had a Jennie. The cook wore a crash helmet over an over an ordinary helmet, which we decided was an unnecessary precaution for his skull was not only thick but empty, and the Jennie had her figure ruined by being repaired with two by fours. The conclusion was that the guy was "nuts,"a word not frowned as much as before the war, and before our generation "went so wild." The cook decided all "aviators"should hang to-gether,(and we punned on that), and would the boys fix his ship,(Jennie) up so he could fly it. He would pay well he made "good cook money," he was a good cook. The boys needed the "good money" but felt that it would be murder to fix the ship so it would fly, so they compromised. They took less money and fixed the Jennie so he couldn't hurt himself in it, but taxi around on the ice and the boys would yell and tell him what to do, that the next trip, it would surely take off, with the stick pushed far forward! The Jennie and cook remained intact, last I heard of them, and on the ground. Sam managed an overcoat, a little tight for him, but"enough of a coat so his Mother wouldn't worry the way I had over him."
