Army Wings in true dashing style. The pilots took over the town.
When we returned from St. Louis, I held out for living by ourselves. I could routine our days,, Buddie's and mine at least, and therefore our health, which needed more regular living. I looked over Chgo. suburbs and decided on La Grange, Ill. which was close enough to the city by train, and surrounded by enough vacant fields from which Matty and Geo. could commute. Three minutes, I believe by airplane, and an hour by train. Geo. felt that I was clipping his wings, when I took part of that thousand and bought the first real bed we had ever had. No more cots. Buddie had to go to kindergarten that Spring, and sad but true, he and I had to stay "grounded" five days each week anyho-o-. We bought second hand chairs, re-tied the spring, re-upholstered them, pretending they were cabin ships that were sure to be "coming in"; we initiated each room and its furniture and stairstep in our regular remembers style. Geo. built a workbench, with a real vice and had Buddie help him build things. We had our ice skated sharpened, and used them once more, after five years abstinence, only to find how out of practise we were; we had a home. No more hideous "lighthousekeeping rooms." George worked over at Yackey's near the airmail field, at Maywood. We started to repay those doubting tradespeople, and hoped to clear up the financial debacle that the traitor of Medina days had put the Weaver Aircraft Company in. We rented a room to a dear girl from Indiana, and when we went out evenings, she and he beau, played house, and cooked snacks. Mah Jong was the craze and the pilots enjoyed the "winds" in a cozy living room for a change on a Mah Jong board.
Sam and Herb came thru en route to Minneapolis, and Sam was able to eat another piece of pumpkin pie, made according to Hoyle, without risking his digestive tract. He admired the draperies and curtains, my new dresses, that I had made, our upholstery jobs, and the real VICE. George was so proud of that, and his workbench... and Buddie and me.... and happy to see Sam and Herb. Geo. and Sam always had tears in their eyes when they said good-bye, but big smiles showing two sets of gorgeous teeth.
