wanted Buddie to bring me to see Buddie's quick suggestion that would stop the expensive damage. The kind woman who owned the boarding house said "Go" she would take care of the baby. The manager said he wished Buddie were old enough to hire and the two of them could run the business. 

We found a well built one floor house on side of the Valley. Front of house on "stilts" the rear window easy to climb into. Our furniture arrived, the doctor about 35 yr. old arrived; Buddie knew how to run the wood burning cooking stove, which I dubbed the "Black Monster"..my first knowledge such existed. The doctor set up twice a week calls to the house. Buddie needed rest from tragedies, to stay in bed except for midday and then out in the ozone. I was to wean the healthy happy baby for she was devouring me. (Later I bought a little electric stove to prepare surely her food.)

Mr. Reeves chauffered [[chauffeured]] the doctor. He was one of the many patients from World War One with lungs ruined by mustard gas. Both men were fearful of our safety. Two days later on the scheduled visit, they brought a dog named Prince. During the war the Dutch Groendahl shepherd dogs carried the messages in the trenches. They are sleek black, fringed belly and shaggy breeches, smaller than our American collie. Prince was a puppy born in the trenches whose mother died serving our country. Mr. Reeves brought the puppy home, trained him, loved him these two years.  The Groendahls were trained for generations to protect aggressors to the home and women folk. Unlike many dogs, they were not a problem. They KNEW an aggressor. If and only if, a threat occurred they were trained to quietly crawl close to the ground and in one leap rip a throat. Within our next week "that little widder on the hill" had the baby on a blanket before the fireplace, Prince started quietly for the bedroom where Buddy was asleep, I ran, turned on the light.
